The National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nebich) intends to support vineyards and fruit nurseries legally operating in Hungary in a difficult situation caused by coronavirus.
Therefore, we ask growers who are preparing to plant vines and orchards to buy seedlings, if possible. In addition to its intention to help the sector, the department also claims that domestic nurseries offer strong, healthy breeding materials produced under controlled conditions for sale, which can also be delivered to their customers in a shorter and more cost-effective way.
The oldest fruit-bearing vineyard is a vineyard with 400-year-old vines in Maribor, Slovenia. Of the berries grown here, 100 bottles of wine are produced annually.
In recent years, it has become a typical tendency for domestic producers to purchase grapes and fruit propagation materials from abroad. Currently, since a pandemic is an obstacle to the free flow of goods, it often happens that the ordered material does not reach the buyer. Meanwhile, domestic vineyards and fruit nurseries are also struggling with sales problems due to quarantine restrictions.
Nebikh recommends that interested producers buy materials for home breeding for planting their vineyards and orchards. Fortunately, in addition to the traditional assortment, many Hungarian nurseries now also offer seedlings grown from new varieties with primary characteristics, so sellers can satisfy more and more customer needs.
