A total of 2654 hectares of greenhouses were built and 539 hectares. were reconstructed in Iran in the last Iranian year (March 2018-19).
According to the Fars agency, as a result of the implementation of these large-scale projects, more than 32 thousand indirect jobs were created.
The report also says that the construction and reconstruction of greenhouses allowed to save 360 million m³ of water and increase agricultural production by 950 thousand tons per year. The Ministry of Agriculture plans to increase the area of greenhouse complexes by more than 48 thousand ha by 2025.
According to the head of the Greenhouse Expansion Project, implemented by the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture, Valiollah Bani-Ameri, the ministry expects to produce 21 million tons of greenhouse agricultural products per year.
Iran ranks second in the world in expanding greenhouse zones after Mexico. The Ministry of Agriculture plans to transfer all vegetable farms to greenhouses within 10 years to save 10 billion cubic meters of water per year.
According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture Muhammad Ali Tahmasebi, the construction of each 1 m² of a greenhouse in Iran costs $ 1-2 thousand.
