African swine fever has reached Dong Nai Province, which is the main source of pork supplies to Ho Chi Minh City.
The viral disease was discovered at two farms in Trang Bom and Nhon Trach districts near Ho Chi Minh City. Infected areas were isolated, sick pigs were rejected, and nearby slaughterhouses were temporarily closed.
Dong Nai Province is the first settlement in southern Vietnam to report African swine fever reportedly reported on pig farms in more than 20 cities and provinces in northern and central Vietnam.More than 85,000 pigs were rejected. However, several northern provinces in Vietnam reported that they were free from African swine fever.
According to the Provincial Livestock Association, Dong Nai has the largest number of pigs in Vietnam — more than 2.5 million heads, of which 75 percent are bred on large farms and the rest on households.About 70 percent of meat products in the country are pork; in the country, 10,000 farms and 2.5 million households are raised for pigs.
